The old Avonwood Primary School building -We have been occupying this building for the past +/-10 years.

  • This is only a temporary safety haven
  • Even though the safe haven has been running for 20 years as well as being the first project of Tehillah, it has never been funded by the government.
  • We accept referrals from DSD, surrounding hospitals, trauma rooms (police stations), churches and by word of mouth.
  • It’s a haven for the homeless, the destitute, abused, mentally ill, frail/neglected/rejected woman and children and the elderly.
  • We can accommodate I IO adults and 15 children
  • We have managed to build a bathroom in every room for the comfort of our elderly and frail care clients.
  • We have a specifically allocated space for the frail, called Emily Frail Care. This location consists of two rooms, which accommodate IO frail care women and IO frail care men.We render a 24-hour nursing service at the frail care centre.
  • Currently we have 75 homeless women, 15 children and 20 men. The demand is growing.
  • We are situated in a gang invested area, thus having our own 24-hour access control area to ensure the safety of the clients.

Spread Your Wings (SYW)

We have been practising substance abuse rehabilitation for the past 13 years and have extended experience in the field.

At Tehillah we provide a successful in-patiend substance abuse, early intervention, aftercare and awareness programme.

We target individuals who struggle with drugs and alcohol abuse.  We admit those 18 years and older with a willingness to be rehabilitated.  We also offer a unique service where we cater for mothers with children.

Our facility boasts 35 bed spaces available for clients, a recreation room, consultation rooms, dining room as well as a swimming pool and garden area.

 IN-PATIENT SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Our 8-week program is modelled on the internationally recognised 12 Steps Program.

OVERVIEW:

  • Our 95% success rate is due to the fact that we walk the extra mile with our clients.
  • Upon completion of their program, we still maintain an open-door policy.
  • We admit male and female clients.
  • We accommodate all religions as we uphold the constitution of this country.
  • The staff members that are responsible for working with the clients, consists out of the following: Senior Social worker, Social Auxiliary worker, Life Skills Specialist, Spiritual Councillor and Coordinators.
  • As part of the spiritual component of the 12 steps, we practise Christianity within Tehillah and we have our own church. We make provision for our Muslim clients to attend the nearest mosque.
  • Our program is unique in the sense that we provide accommodation and an employment opportunity within the organisation, after completion of the program.
  • We understand that idleness might trigger the client to relapse and want to prevent that.

AFTERCARE: THE MATRIX PROGRAMME

  • This is the follow up to the in-patient program.
  • The aftercare program is over seen by a social worker or social auxiliary worker.
  • It has a time span of 16 weeks, twice a week from 10am – 1pm.
  • Weekly drug tests are being done within the clients sessions.
  • Individual and group sessions are done to curb and prevent relapsing.
  • Random home visits are done to enhance family reunification.

EARLY INTERVENTION

The focus point with this program is the infiltration of schools with the aim of intervening and alerting the children regarding the dangers of substance abuse.

  • We visit the surrounding schools twice a week.
  • This programme runs over 6 weeks which includes a family session.
  • Within this time we highlight the dangers of substance abuse, as our main aim is intervention.
  • We intervene and try to prevent suspension from school, in cases where suspension is caused by substance abuse. We are mindful that suspension leads to idleness and behavioural problems.
  • Within this time we deal with early school drop-outs, teenage pregnancy, STI and HIV/AIDS because of promiscuous behaviour brought about by drugs.
  • We focus on prevention of the above mentioned.

AWARENESS & PREVENTION

  • This entails a track drive that is based on the phrase “Prevention is better that cure”.
  • We specifically take the clients with us in order for the community to hear first -hand that substance abuse destroys lives and ultimately communities.
  • We do it every alternative Friday.

Feeding Scheme (TFS)

  • For the past 20 years we have been giving out soup to 500-700 people per day.
  • This project has never been funded by the government.
  • Ingredients are sponsored by the Dutch Reformed Church.
  • People targeted are mothers, children and clients on TB treatment, ARV’s and treatment for chronic disease.
  • We have experienced that most people who queue for soup are the ones receiving a social grant.
  • Every alternative Wednesday we have a session called a “Hour of Power”, where we address issues like parenting skills, domestic violence, teenage pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, early school dropouts and family planning.
  • We have a vegetable garden funded by the Department of Agriculture.
  • The gardening project is being utilised as a therapeutic intervention for our inpatient substance abuse clients.
  • It serves as a platform for educational excursions for our creche and our mentally ill clients.
  • Fresh vegetables is then distributed to the creche, safe haven, rehabilitation centre and HIV/AIDS clients.
